Dying Fuel Pump in GMC Truck?
« on: November 27, 2015, 07:24:25 PM »
I have a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500.  I'm wondering if the fuel pump is going out.

Symptoms:

1. Doesn't start right away w/o pumping gas pedal several times.
2. Starts, revs, then dies. Next time usually starts right up.
3. Starts better when pointing downhill than up, especially when fuel is low, pump in front of tank?
4. Restarts right away if not left too long.
5. Runs fine after started.

Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Go to the nearest dealership and buy a brand new one, it will not have these problems.

With fuel issues always change the filter first. Its cheap. And in general people should do it more. Its the easiest thing to change. Then id do what coach said if you havent already done the filter.

I went through this a short time ago. You have the classic symptoms of a bad fuel pressure regulator. It should hold pressure when vehicle is shut off but they get old and leak down so you have no pressure when you start it up again, hence having to crank it for a while. Pull the hose off the regulator and if there is any sign of gas in the hose then it's leaking. It's a quick and easy fix as it's located on the drivers side of the engine and is a pretty cheap part. You can borrow a fuel pressure tester from Autozone and check for the leakdown yourself to be sure. Info is all over the net on this common problem.

Thanks, after looking at some youtube videos, I am pretty sure this is the issue.  There was fuel in the vacuum hose.  HuntWa rocks.

Oh yeah, welcome to the site mtnwkr.

Surprised you have not changed the fuel pump already. I have the same truck. I'm on my 5th one. Glad I had the dealer change the first and got the lifetime warranty. Mine would run fine then lose power and act like it wasn't getting fuel then run fine again. I tried all the cheap internet fixes and wound up replacing the pump. Went through 3 more pumps in 2 months, last one has been going for about 8 years. Great truck other than a few issues.

It probably helps that I've only put a few thousand miles on it in the last ten years.   ;)
