BHW Bolt Action Barrels

Has anyone used one? Thoughts on the 3 groove polygonal? Pondering another build and have heard good things about the AR tubes but not much about bolt action barrels.  I know they didn't make barrel blanks when it was ran out of the moses lake area but have heard they have started since moving to Oregon.

I would shoot a Broughton, Krieger, Brux, Benchmark, Obermeyer etc before I would shoot a BHW barrel when it comes to a bolt rifle.

I don't know much about BHW. If I didn't want to spend the money on a hart/lilja/rockcreek/broughton etc I'd get a X-Caliber barrel. I've talked with them and sounds like they do everything the top guys do. Brand new high $$ drilling machines, lapping etc.  I got one 6mm 12-twist but it still needs to be chambered. Cost me $200. Also have a hart on a 300wsm that shoots great.

Thanks for the replies, kinda what I figured.  Running a bartlein now and like it as well as a benchmark.. Just looking at the options... Looking at a sporter contour in .280 ackley again love the catridge.  Leaning benchmark since they are local!  BIGGERHAMMER disregard the pm I sent ya a few days ago.

Have played with several of the first bolt barrels turned out by them. A 308 and a 300wsm. Both have excellent accuracy and very good velocities. The 300, mounted on a Savage Bear hunter was used in Africa to harvest a dozen or so plains game. At the price, not bad at all👍


Yes, barrel is octagon to the forend, then round to the crown. Beautiful and unique look!

If you don't want to wait for a benchmark barrel. If they don't have one on the rack. You can jump on 3rd generation shooters supply. They stock a lot of there barrels. I got one from benchmark about a month ago and they had it on the rack and got it shipped in a few days. I just grabbed one off 3rd generation a week ago and it should be here today.

They also stock Krieger another of my faves.

That octagon treatment has been around for years. Here's one that my father did in the 80's

I have a BHW barrel on my little CZ 527 in 264 LBC and it's been great so far. It's shot a few spectacular groups but most hold right around .5 MOA. I probably wouldn't use one for a bench rest rifle, but they're great general purpose barrels. FWIW, I have more McGowan barrels than anything at the moment and I'm happy with all of them.

I've been using 3rd generation also as well as bugholes. I'm spinning up 3 McGowans in the near future myself. I can't comment on the McGowan yet, but one of the local smiths has been through 50 of them with no dissapointments so far.
