Hello again all, I will be doing my first actual upland game bird hunt Saturday, 12/19/2015. it should be an interesting time I think. If we can find any pheasants (which I am doubting seeing as the dog is very out of practice and the ol lady wont let me take him out) that would be great. If not we will be doing some quail hunting around a friends place. either way it will be a very fun time. will report back with the results. happy hunting everyone

Good luck hope you have a blast and get a few. The dog should pick things right back up even if he is rusty, just keep an eye on him/her physically. Far more likely to have physical issues than bird issues. Shoot straight and be safe.

Unless the dog is so fat and out of shape that it's a health hazard, it makes no sense to me why you would NOT take the dog. 

Hunting dogs deserve to be hunted, it's what they're bred for.  Pretty hard to get back "in practice" without going.

I wasn't able to get the dog out of the house. Which would have really been helpful.  We hunted the fish trap area. Just walked around alot.   Flushed up 5 bobwhites while I was on a ridge, missed my 3 shots. They flew straight to my buddy, who also missed them... oh well though, it was a fun time anyway. Next time the dog is coming out

I know they weren't a quail like that. With the little dangle thing.  They were a little bigger then them. I think, again we were just guessing on the species. All I have seen are pheasant and ruffled grouse and the cali quail. This is all new to me

Probably Hungarian partridges.  There are no Bobwhite Quail around Fishtrap.

Ok, that makes more sense. It was light brown with some white in the tail. I'm going to have to do some research on my bird species. I have this next week off,  so I'm going to be trying to get out s couple times.  Mostly in the fishtrap area. Since its fairly close. .

Yes, you should study up. Sounding like an ass, but you don't need to be out shooting birds if you can't tell what it is.

Yes, bird I.D. is important. Check the other posts and you will see Huns, Chukars and CA quail on display.

Gentle reminder, Fishtrap is a Pheasant Release Site and thus, non-toxic shot is required…I.E. NO LEAD. Hopefully you are using steel or one of the other non-toxic shot alternatives per the reg. book.

Also, stop by the WDFW Region One Headquarters in Spkane Valley or do some internet research on the WDFW website for some less hammered upland areas than Fishtrap.

I was using steel shot. Not that ignorant haha..  but I did some looking at pictures  the day before..  and seeing birds out in the field will help me know for future. How each one takes off, what they look like when they take off.  Etc.      I have a friend that lives in the Pullman area, going to try and make a trip down there on my week off
