I still cant hit a coyote
« on: January 25, 2009, 02:59:49 PM »
My dad and I went out this morning and about 5 min into the first stand I heard a shot. I look over and see a coyote running at 60yd's so I get on it with the .338 win and right as I was going to shot dad shot again and the coyote turned and ran right to dad. He shot at the coyote again at about 10yd's and it turned and then he ended it :chuckle: I was laughing so heard I forgot to switch the call over to coyote dist. once I stopped laughing I hit the button and about 6 coyotes around us let off. We sat there for a little bit then decided to leave, as we where standing there talking about/taking pics it a coyote started to challenge bark us but was in line with the houses behind us so we couldn't shot :bash:.

We made two more stands and had a shot at one that sat down at 750yd's which I shot at with the .338 and heard a loud thud and then no coyote to be seen, we both think I hit it but when we went and looked there was nothing there  :dunno:. On the way home I took us to a new spot and I grabbed my AR this time (I have to idea why:dunno:). We walk over a ridge and set up over looking a large valley, I started to call and about 10min in a coyote comes out of no where in the open. I move and got on it and let one fly and missed at 100yd's :(, the coyote took off straight at us then disappeared in to a little cut, I set up and started the coyote dist and saw another one come running in and it stopped at 90yd's so I shot at it and missed again.  When we got back to the truck I decide to see if it was the gun or me I shot at a gopher mound that was 200yd's away and hit dead center every time . So the moral of the story is I can hit the broad side of a coyote.

This is how close the coyote was when dad finished it. :chuckle:

O I forgot to say it but the coyote had no upper front teeth and after looking closer dad first shot which he tried for a head shot took out its teeth :o. I got my call from bearmanric today and it proved to be lucking, I howl a few time's with it at the begining of each stand we had a coyote come in on. :IBCOOL:

Several things but only my opinion.  By shooting moving at certain times, shooting difficult shots, and using a caller is definately educating the dogs in your area.  No problem with using a .338, but how accurate is it, are you using a scope, Bipods, do you know its exact trajectory at all ranges you are shooting at?  I would eliminate all the equipment issues, then start looking at your shooting skills.  Maybe the position your using is your worst one for stability.  If you have your equipment and skills down then you have a little excitement overriding your equipment and shooting skills.  A coyote looks three times larger then the actual kill zone.

Its not the .338 I have problems with its my damn AR. I shot both a lot out past 300yd's and none of the shots today where move targets. I carry a ballistic chart for the .338 (750yd's is 15 moa come up) and have a 24power mill dot on it and I can hit a 10" plate in the middle 3 inchs at 750yd's with just about every shot. I just cant seem to hit them with the AR for some reason it's cursed I tell you cursed :chuckle:

I bought a custom AR a few years ago and that thing is an absolute tac driver but I've missed so many coyotes with it it's embarrasing. I'm so disgusted I may even sell the thing. Give me my old 22-250 and it's a done deal. With the AR I'll hit about 4 out of 10.  :bash:

I had my dad with me but its hard to hit a coyote running with open sights at that distance, and I didnt even want to try since I missed them standing still.
