Shoot or No Shot 2016, Episode #5
« on: January 28, 2016, 08:49:44 AM »
Yep, you have another chance at a Roosey here. It's archery season in the Oregon coastal jungle and you have decided you will take any bull on this hunt. Your buddy has done an exceptional job of calling (using both verbal and non verbal elk sounds) and has just stopped this bull on a dime with a fine popping grunt! Your buddy is down to the left (left yellow arrow) about 30 yards and you (the shooter for this morning's hunt) are located straight down from the bull at less than 20 yards (right yellow arrow). You drew back as the bull materialized, quickly, and at this moment in time, you are at full draw with good cover behind you. You really have less than seconds until barney bull gets a full snout full of your stinky human scent and blasts off to parts unknown. Shoot or no shot?

If you say "shoot", save the picture to your desktop and open in MS Paint, you'll be able to place a spot, X, or whatever on the critter before you save it back to a jpg and add the marked up pic with your post.

I don't understand your shooter's position description. Is it set up as a straight on shot?

If he is slightly one way or the other, not dead-on, it would be a yes for me aiming slightly off the breast bone about 6-8 inches up the chest so that the arrow angles through the heart area.

Sorry, no pic.

Ya, pretty straight on (slightly canted to his left shoulder side) from where you (the shooter) is setup, and, at full draw.

Hopefully my caller would give just a little cow squeak so he turned a little more to his right, then, whack!

No shot here for me.  If he turns straight on to me then I am sending one right into that soft spot at the base of the throat.

Geesh Jonathan, I did a fabulous job of calling this little guy in for you and now you say no shot?  Read this Aron Snyder article please and see if just perhaps, it changes your mind on this scenario.  Think "shirt pocket".  Let me know sir  ;)

I thought it said 50 yards ? Didn't it before? 20 yards I put it right on the edge of his mane...no doubt

:chuckle: I think I read it too quickly originally.  Truthfully at 20 yards, there's not many shots I wouldn't take

 :peep:

I kill him with a near straight on shot at almost 20 yards and then tell all the intranet police I shot him broadside through the boiler room. :chuckle:
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
