Primos Proof Cam
« on: February 25, 2016, 08:03:34 PM »
Anyone here have any Primos Proof Cam 02's?  I just purchased 2 from Natchez Shooting Supplies  for $75 ea, and just wondering what shutter speed you feel is best for the night pics.  Overall it seems like a pretty decent camera. Thanks in advance.

I'd pass on it - that's just me.  Every product (calls, bleat cans, cams, etc.) I've bought from Primos has been garbage or broken soon after purchase.  I have two Primos trail cams - Mistake!  I should have learned my lesson and quit after the first, but the price on Amazon on Cyber Monday was too good to pass up.   :bash:  I knew better.

No more Primos anything for me!

I bought three of The Primos 02 from Natchez.  I have them set to video on the lower setting.  Trigger speed on video seems to be sufficient as I have not had any empty frames yet.  The infrared seems to really draw a lot of attention from the coyotes and raccoon that I've caught on film.  The Primos 02 has a bright red glow to them and it does wash out the frame when they first fire up.  When I'm looking at the IR illuminators the red glow is visibly much brighter than my Bushnell cameras.

In this video, the coyote is likely walking toward the camera when it triggers.  Camera is set waist high so the IR light is right in his face.  You can see he is stopped, looking at the camera, then lays his ears back and trots away.  I have similar video with raccoons and other coyotes traveling the other direction.

I also have video from a Bushnell Aggressor where an elk is licking the camera.  The Aggressor Red Glow has a much softer glow than the Primos 02.  I prefer the Bushnells because I can set them up to take a series of photos then go to video.  However, they are twice the money.  With the Bushnells, I still get animals looking at them but it is at a much lower rate of the IR photos.

For the price (I'm at $85/ea), I think they were a good buy.  They take good daytime pictures, have a good trigger speed and they are easy to set up.  The worst thing I can say about them is that the IR diodes glow very bright.  If a thief walks by at night, he will see it.
I have lock boxes and cables for them and I'll be using them in some places that they may find a new owner.

I finally was able to check out my new proof cams, and am really satisfied with them so far. Almost a 1000 pics and both the day and night pics look good.  I was surprised to see the bull still packing antlers on 6 April.  The one cow looks like it is losing some hair, and the other cow was limping.  Look closely on her rear leg and it appears to be a wound that looks like a claw mark, or do you think it may be hoof rot? What causes elk to lose hair like that?

That's a great night shot!  I can't get a decent still photo at night with any of mine.  Maybe the subject is too close?
I have been getting decent night video with the camera up high and the subject at the maximum trigger distance.  That camera is running security duty to catch mail theft.
