New state record brown trout!
« on: April 25, 2016, 02:44:40 PM »
So I heard on the radio yesterday that someone caught a 29lb brown trout out of Rock Lake by my parent's house in Whitman county. Anyone else hear this or see the fish? I wanna see a pic!

If the story pans out. I'd guess the launch will be wall to wall with hopefuls.

This is some very wise information. That's actually from one side of the boat to the other. You can see rocks on one side and the other could be really deep.

People have been catching a lot of steelhead. They are maybe 12-14 inches still. I have caught several browns over the years that were 20" or bigger with some pushing 28" but they were long and slender, spawned out with decay and weighed maybe 8-9lbs. I've seen many big trout come out of the lake from other folks as well so I was hoping someone could show me a pic of this beast. :dunno:

With no one talking I will wait to see the photos what ever the size it should make the paper soon. Unless the person doesn't care about 15 minutes of fame and ran it through the Grill.

Sure looks like a giant brown to me but not at all 29lbs. Even long arming it doesn't look like an upper 20's fish. Certainly a toad though! Congrats to the angler!

I believe, if I remember correctly, a Common Brown has halos around some of the spots and will have spots on the adipose fin, German Browns just has black and brown spots without any halos and no spots on the adipose. I think????? lol

german brown is spotted and a common brown isn't. Used to catch common Browns in Reno.  They look like a rainbow with pale colors and no spots

It's a German brown. The guy lives in Colfax who caught it. I didn't realize who it was until mossy posted the pic of him. I'll get an actual weight for ya but it seems to be more like a 19lb fish at most. Still a once in a lifetime German brown if ya ask me!

Got the word it was actually 17.2lbs. Browns look a lot different coming from very cold deep water than they do a river or during spawning seasons. From the picture, if thats where he caught the fish, the water is 300+ deep. Notice the color differences in a lake vs. river brown.

Definitely a brown trout, either German or otherwise. If they aren't in their spawning colors, they can be very silvery with subdued spotting. That's a very common coloration for them.
