Back in the day archery season opened Oct 1st, use to call in bulls all the time. BTW I called in and killed my ML bull last year on October 3rd.

It depends on the year. For the 2015 season I called in a 5x5 bull and he was bugleing all the way in, opening day. My hunting partner got his two days later and that bull was also bugleing. But if we have a year when it rains alot that first week then it seams like the rut shuts down. Just depends on the weather, like almost everything else hunting.

Don't forget that the crazy bugle-fests are caused by a cow in heat.  One day the whole drainage can be silent and two days later it can be going absolutely crazy!  Odds are good for the first of October, but you have to hit the right circumstances as always.  Remember that just because the elk are quiet doesn't mean you can't call them in.  The very best hunting time is neatly sandwiched in between Archery and Muzzy.
