kuiu pack fit question
« on: May 09, 2016, 12:46:12 PM »
Hi yall,

Have a weird kuiu pack fit question for kuiu connoisseurs among us.  After 3-4 miles with 70+ lbs in the pack (icon pro, load sling or bag), I begin to feel the weight really sitting on my sacrum.  No bruising, rubbing or red marks, but a lot of pressure right at the top of my butt.  The pack is setup correctly on my hip bones, and the load lifters are working properly.

Just seems like after 3-4 miles I really feel the frame bottom pushing into my sacrum via the lumbar pad.  You'll feel pressure at this point when first putting on the pack, because that is how the frame is designed to distribute the weight, but after awhile you 'really' start to feeling, and I could see it becoming uncomfortable after 5-7 miles.

I think the lumbar pad is designed to ride on your sacrum--not on your butt, but just above your butt.

anyone else noticed where they feel all the weight distributed after a decent walk?

I could be wrong but didn't you receive two different sized torso pads?  Could be something to play with

I received the additional insert which I installed.  Probably just how the pack sits on my hips.

How long has this been going on? I had a similar issue with my Kifaru pack, but after a couple weeks of training hikes, my body got conditioned for weighted hikes, and the discomfort decreased significantly.

I've only gone on 3-4 hikes, but I didn't think about the conditioning aspect of it.  Perhaps I'll just learn to ignore it after a few more hikes.

Weight is weight and 100lbs can only be so comfortable I guess.

You can also play with your load lifters and waist belt tension, and let the weight ride on your shoulders for a little while, giving your hips and lumbar area a rest.

good advice, thanks.  Working my way up to 100 lbs and 5 mile walks around the neighborhood.  I like the setup I have with kuiu just need it to be manageable for long, heavy hikes.

Right now the lumbar pad doesn't cause any pain or annoying discomfort, just more like 'it'll be nice when I can take this thing off'.

Have you done a weighted hike with out the extra lumbar pad ?? I don't rum mine with it and it seems okay to me...everyone is different tho....your body will definitely get used to it...the human body is pretty amazing at adapting

No but I imagine it wouldn't take much incentive to get him to come to America to become a packer....sulphur miners have it pretty bad

Every pack with 100lbs feels that way after 20 minutes to me.
I'd say your doing yourself right by training to handle the abuse.

Loaded up the 70 lbs of sand today for a short two miles around the neighborhood.  I placed the hip belt about .5-1" lower, still steady on my hip bones, but allowed the lumbar pad to snug up against my butt.  On this walk I felt my core working much less and my glutes working much more, so I suspect the hip belt might have been riding too high.

This time around I felt the lumbar pad pressing flat against my sacrum, whereas it felt like the bottom edge was sort of digging into my sacrum, like the  bottom of the frame was 'sitting' on top of my butt.  Still on my hip bones because I would bend and squat and the hip belt wouldn't move an inch, so I know it was wrapped around my pelvis.

I'm just used to a lumbar pad pressed flat against my lower back, but this pack seems to want to ride lower back sacrum.  If you look at a human skeleton, you see the sacrum curve back and actually form part of your butt.  Seems like the pad would mate up to this quite nicely.

...worse than shoes...

yeah, I'd image over 100 lbs will just plain suck regardless...
