Can be a good tag, little bit of work and you can get chances at good Bulls.  Don't think it stacks up against other quality permits like on the Eastside but should be a fun hunt.

At least 10 years ago?  I don't think it will ever go back to otc, too much money in the permit system to be had and they need quality units on the westside for people to put in for.

ive hunted the white many years, the deer hunting in the unit just doesn't do it for me.  I can count the number of decent bucks I've seen on one hand.  They do have a late season rife quality tag now, should be in the buck category imho.

Not positive, but I think it was 1988 when I had the misfortune of arriving up there for my week long archery elk hunt and saw all the fliers posted on the trees about the unit having an "emergency" closure and limited to spike only.

My buddy drew that tag as his fourth choice last year and saw 1 spike buck and hunted pretty hard multiple days.

they went spike only for 3 years, then opened it back up to 3 point or better for three years, then to permit only.

That explains it.
I switched to Manastash, spent the next 20+ years...
Came back to the west side to hunt branched bulls
