Puyallup river closed for the year

I just read in the Tacoma News Tribune that the Puyallup river is closed to fishing for the year. You can bet it will be corked off by the Indians though. I am happy I didn't waste my cash on a license this year. This state has become a joke with our WDFW caving to the tribes. Glad I'm heaxed to Alaska next month.

I hadn't seen that yet.  I did get an email that they had reached an agreement on salmon fishing.

Exactly! what was being negotiated? how much money the WDFW was going to receive from the tribe? Doesn't seem like much of a negotiation. Seems like the tribes said "we are going to do whatever we want" and WDFW said "okay"

If they were to go for the 50% in the river, then they would have to close all the saltwater.  I guess they think that the half caught in the sound will happen so fast they can't open river, no under quota from the salt?  I think that was the trade off with WDFW to open up the sound.
I don't get to the saltwater anymore either, and with the nets almost pointless to go to the river half the week.

Are there commercial coho fisherys on the Puyallup River? I want to catch the fish I paid for on the river next to my house. If that river doesn't have enough fish. then that is fine. KNOWONE should be able to fish it.

fyi, Not trying to be an ass. These are serious questions. I know im not the most knowledgeable but this seems so wrong to me. What did the tribes give up for the slow coho run this year? Cause they are still going to slaughter them in the Puyallup. We know that much.

we really need to eliminate the commercial fishing mandate in this state.  the tribes can more than fill the need that the cowboys currently take from the recreational anglers.

in years of low returns, rivers need to make escapement before fisheries in the salt(mixed stock) are conducted.  that way we can allow more opportunity in rivers with good numbers and less in areas with less.  however, the boat manufacturers and charter industry have a lot of say in the process and WDFW will not sacrifice the ocean fisheries for the sake of the good of the fish.

The Puyallup tribe only fishes in river.  That is the case with many but not all tribes.  Part of the reason the seasons this year are what they are is that some tribes can only catch in river fish, so, in order to allow them the 50% they get per the Boldt decision, some rivers are closed to rec guys since they had their shot at the fish in the salt and the tribe didn't (it isn't quite this simple everywhere but on the Puyallup it is nearly that simple).  What this fails to account for though is not all rec guys can fish in the salt, that is a considerably more expensive proposition.  So, this further disadvantages the fisherman with little disposable income.  With the likes of the Green, Puyallup, Nisqually and Skokomish rivers shut down in September and October and the Puyallup all season, there is hundreds, if not thousands of fisherman that will have to make alternate plans or just not fish. 

This is what happens when there aren't enough fish for everyone and it sucks.  My biggest fear is that we won't get some of these fisheries back next year...

Could be Muckleshoots or commercial boats, depends on where they were, there is a portion only the tribe can fish.

i did not know that first part. Thanks for the clarification. I am also worried we won't get it back.
