Frustrating at the range today

I put my first shots thought the cvs optima, everything went good in the first shot, 50 yards, 3" high, and then my second shot was a misfire, then the third, then fourth and so on, I'm shooting 777 ffg at 100 gr loose, and barns 290 sabot,. The powder and musket caps and gun are all new. Breech plug hole was clear on every shot, of course it would plug up after the misfire. Then I would clean it and try again, only to experience the whole thing over again, any ideas?!?!?

What did you clean your bore with? Maybe there was excess moisture at your breech plug that got your powder wet. Or perhaps your musket caps are defective. I've had a few fail on me but only rarely and never several consecutively.

Did the caps (pop)?  Or not?

Did you clean the gun before taking it to the range. There is some nasty packing oil and stuff in there that needs to be cleaned out first or you will have issues.

Also does yours have the new breech plug with the black nipple?

There are for sure better muzzy gurus on here than I.

But my buddy had the same problem.

I would set the 777 off to the side and try pyrodex or black powder.

I know several people who have had that happen with 777.

Did the caps (pop)?  Or not?

  We had a similar problem with a knight, turned out it was the firing pin not striking the cap every time. Not sure if that could be the issue, it was a known problem with a few of the ultra-lights. I would unload it, put a piece of paper where the pin strikes the cap and make sure it touches when you pull the trigger  (a few times).

OK making an assumption and you know that is not always good!  But, you are saying misfire so am assuming that the caps are popping and trying to ignite the powder.  Even though it is T7 in this weather there is no good reason for it not to ignite and go boom expect for...

After that very first shot what did you do?  Were or did you run a wet patch to clean the bore? 

To me, and again assuming that the caps were igniting, the problem is probably in the breech plug either being fouled or plugged.

If you are at a place where you might preform a test take the rifle and just pops some caps.  Put the muzzle very close to the ground and be sure each time you pop a cap you see dust, dirt, or movement of the grass as the gas leaves the bore.  Do not run any patches while doing this test.  If after each pop you are seeing movement in your test material then you really should have no problem igniting T7.

Following along. I just picked up the updated breach plug for my two year old optima. I tested it out and I was using 777 3F, fancy German musket caps and fired it successfully three times in a row without any cleaning.

 OK thanks for the patients it took me a while to reply,  to start things off the answer is no I did not clean the gun out of the box,  that may have been my first mistake,  as for my definition of misfire,  The primer popped and did not ignite the powder,  I did run a test that was suggested and fire a primer  with the barrel pointed straight at the ground and got good results three times in a row,  I shot it at blades of grass in the blades of grass moved indicating the primer was making it through the barrel,  which is a good sign,  The gun is all clean now,  and I'm going to try it again this week,  and yes it does have the updated black nipple from CVa. If there's more suggestions I will take them thank you

Sounds like you are on the right track now!

Sabotloader Is a great guy to talk to! He's help me out a few times and is quite knowledgeable!
Not saying other guys aren't, but you can see Sabotloader on almost every thread and get a ton of good info from him. He defiantly knows his Muzzy *censored*!
