Shooting bow in wind
« on: July 21, 2016, 06:53:14 PM »
I was just out shooting my bow and there is a storm brewing so it was getting blustery outside. It got me thinking as to any tricks or tips you guys have to shooting your bow in the wind.

I remove my quiver when possible as it's like having a sail on your bow.

I you run a bow mounted quiver take that sucked off. Its a big wind kite and has a lot of surface for wind to push against. One of the main reason I hunt only with a hip quiver. Don't like the weight on my bow and always windy :bash:

Shooting your bow in the wind is a trick :chuckle:  with light steady wind it is possible but with heavier bluster winds it is a real crap shoot in my opinion once you get past ~20yds. I got caught by a gust on my buck last year, drifted my arrow over 24" right and up 12" over 55yds, luckily I was sneaky and he gave me another chance that didn't fail.

I want my arrows on the bow ! Quick follow ups , and your hip quiver won't bang on stuff or drag  on the ground during a stock. As far as the wind learn how use your bubble to compensate half bubble to full bubble further out . Top limb into the wind .

I know when I have been shooting on windy days at the range I aimed approx 2 1/2 feet off the target and let the wind carry it at 60 yards into the vitals. I was just messing around and wouldn't do a shot at that distance in the wind I was in on an animal though.

And then when the wind is really bad...let your hunting partner shoot first so you can gauge the drift before your shot! ;) ;)
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

He would have fit right in back in the old days.  Back before rangefinders we shot fast because the first arrow was usually just a distance and drift calculator. :chuckle:
