I think this is year 9 for this guy.   He escaped as a chick from my pen.   He has been free range and running around my house for 9 years.   The Wenas has no shortage of Hawks or coyotes.  In fact there was a big retail roosting in the yard last night looking for a meal.

Wow, you would think that he would have been picked off right away, no camouflage there at all.

Idaho fish and game Dept.  Has done studies over the years on the best way to release pen raised birds back into the wild.  Very interesting articles about rearing pens kept in the wild until released with a way better chance of survival.

I belive there is a product called "the surigator" or something like that that protects chick's but also keeps thier natural hiding instincts intact.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Thanks for all of the information.  I think I have a bunch more research to do but this is a great start.  Thanks to everyone for your input and keep it coming.

I'm a big fan of "if you build it, they will come".  Sometimes they just need water.  Chicks need some wet areas, not for the chicks, but for the bugs for them to feed on.  Predators from the air are the biggest threat.  Cover needs to be thick.  I applaud your efforts!  It should be rewarding but the cards may be stacked against you.  I don't think it applies to you, but too often people don't focus on the critical habitat.  The real square footage your are dealing with when crops come off and winter sets in.

Bone, I didn't know roosters lived that long and can't believe he's still around.  Too cool!
We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.
