I believe local elk get pretty familiar with human sent and human noises they will tolerate much more of both . I try and let the woods quiet down before calling . but I will say those must have been some stinky fellas and obviously they didn't understand early season calling techniques . I personally don't try and call elk in I'm not hunting but everyone has a right to. throwing a locater bugle out is way different than sweet talking in a elk . if you get a response put it in the bank and move on or set up and glass. id call it a tool of scouting to a degree. better than stomping threw there beds .

Didn't intend to start a fire storm.  Lots of Respect for RT from what I have seen on this Forum.  Probably has forgotten more about elk hunting then I will ever know.

However, I would stand by my comment that IMO calling before season is foolish.  I am sure it can be done in a way that doesn't educate elk, but most isn't IME.

I was glassing a basin and saw two hunters stop to call on the edge of a little opening.  They waited about 5 minutes and pushed on.  About 30 minutes later a bull came slinking into sight.  Went right to where they had called, sniffed the ground, and bolted.  IME elk that haven't recently associated elk noises with human presence are much easier to call in.  ( Think the first hunter to hit a drainage in September. )   Just my  :twocents:

Pretty much all Im doing is finding elk that I hunted last season. I have hunted two bulls here pretty much for 3 years!  Been withing 15 yards several times just couldnt close the deal.  Im finding them not calling them in.

No hard feelings.    But a bugle sure does get the blood pumping!!

Getsum
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

Had trail camera pics of cows and calves running past camera. What was chasing them?  A hard horned bull COVERED in mud.

They are bugling for sure.  Got into a drainage early this AM with three different bulls bugling back and forth.

I was out scouting yesterday and walked myself into a herd. I gave a couple quick whistles coming as close to a calf as I could and had a 6x6 light up 25 yards in front of me. Got a good clip of it with my phone. If it were season he'd have an arrow in him.
