Question:  Are you guys out there calling right now?  Pretty stupid idea to call before season IMO.  This time of year especially they may come in silently an hour after you called, and if they smell you you've just educated another elk.    :twocents:

Stupid?  You have just opened mouth and inserted foot.

Dont worry Im on private property! I wont educate YOUR elk there buddy..

Jesus!

Personally, I would feel bad killing a poor ole uneducated elk, so educate as many as I can.

I wouldn't worry.

Lol i have no idea why youd want to locate bulls you already know are there.....sometimes the hardest part about having a good area is staying out of it

Just my opinion  :hello:

I believe his season starts Saturday so if he was locating and getting ready to actually call him in Saturday seems fine with me.

Knowing RT, I highly doubt he was out stomping hills calling for bulls right now. I'd bet nickel he was in his camp chair trying out a new diaphragm and was pleasantly surprised with the result. :chuckle:

Any luck on finding a ram?
Nope, but it wasn't for lack of vertical boot miles:chuckle:

I had 4 rams all decent walk into my camp the other evening.  Gf got to watch so it was pretty cool.

I always think about setting up below a good landing that everyone pulls over and bugles off of.  Set up 150 yds below the landing and respond to their bugles n see how far you can lure them into the thick n nasty  stuff....bu then again who has that kind of time in September.  :chuckle:

Didn't intend to start a fire storm.  Lots of Respect for RT from what I have seen on this Forum.  Probably has forgotten more about elk hunting then I will ever know.

However, I would stand by my comment that IMO calling before season is foolish.  I am sure it can be done in a way that doesn't educate elk, but most isn't IME.

I was glassing a basin and saw two hunters stop to call on the edge of a little opening.  They waited about 5 minutes and pushed on.  About 30 minutes later a bull came slinking into sight.  Went right to where they had called, sniffed the ground, and bolted.  IME elk that haven't recently associated elk noises with human presence are much easier to call in.  ( Think the first hunter to hit a drainage in September. )   Just my  :twocents:
