Didn't intend to start a fire storm. Lots of Respect for RT from what I have seen on this Forum. Probably has forgotten more about elk hunting then I will ever know. However, I would stand by my comment that IMO calling before season is foolish. I am sure it can be done in a way that doesn't educate elk, but most isn't IME. I was glassing a basin and saw two hunters stop to call on the edge of a little opening. They waited about 5 minutes and pushed on. About 30 minutes later a bull came slinking into sight. Went right to where they had called, sniffed the ground, and bolted. IME elk that haven't recently associated elk noises with human presence are much easier to call in. ( Think the first hunter to hit a drainage in September. ) Just my
