Floor less, Pasayten and bugs??
« on: August 29, 2016, 06:23:39 AM »
Hey all,
So my dilemma is. I'm taking my boy and dog for a 5 day hike/bear hunt.
I can carry a 6 plus pound tent with room for 3 or a go lite 3 person tipi, dropping almost 5 pounds. I love this idea but am looking for opinions on the bug situation up high this time of year. Maybe 6000 feet.
Any comments pros and cons would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Dont know about the bugs, but its probably a bad idea to take your dog with you when your bear hunting. Hound hunting for bears is illegal and have heard stories about people getting their balls kicked for having a dog crate in the back of their truck,  :twocents:

I've used floor less for awhile now and like it. Never had a problem with bugs really. I would save the weight.

Good luck on the hunt

Been awhile since I've used a 'floored' tent. If the skeeters are bad you can spray the perimeter of the ground around the tent to keep them from coming under. Ants can be a problem, just be careful where you set up.

Thanks for the info.....

It's pretty frustrating about my dog though. Sitting here thinking about it I can see a case being built. We planned this hunt/hike for the 3 of us. So not sure my next course of action. A hiking trip with a rifle is what it sounds like.

Grouse opens Sept 1 and dogs are more than welcome on those hunts.

We just bear hunted up high in a wilderness area 2 weekends ago. The bugs were annoying, but not terrible. We only use floorless and no screens on the tent. Everything was just fine. Good luck and enjoy the hunt!

take a therma cell or mosquito coil they both work really well within a floorless shelter

Bugs are very variable, depending on summer moisture and current low temps.   Mosquitos are having a banner year and havent been froze out yet.   Big temp drops are supposed to happen this week, so that might happen.   That being said, I go with a fly and put repellent on my face at night if need be.  go lite, its way more enjoyable.

A month ago I'd tell you to stay home all together, that's how bad the skeeters were up high. More than ruined a couple fishing and scouting trips for me.

Like Bone said, a couple good freezes and the few remaining pests will be deader than doornails.

I can't think of a single reason I would ever take a 6# shelter anywhere in the backcountry if I also had a floorless shelter at my disposal...BRING THE TIPI. Even if there are bugs left, they have a tendency to just buzz around at the peak without the slightest inclination to bug the occupants.
