First Out of State Elk
« on: September 18, 2016, 12:10:07 PM »
Stuck this guy the other day. Had several close encounters with big bulls including the herd bull that this guy was following around. A few mornings back, I was moving down onto a herd. I had the bull going and was excited for the chance to try and pull him to within shooting range. All of a sudden, 50 yards below me there is a spike. Well a few tree hopping maneuvers and cow calls brought the spike into broadside at 35 yards.

RAD broadhead did its job and then some! It was a steep downhill shot but the razor sharp blades made quick work of the lungs. He ran downhill about 50 yards and crashed hard. When I got down there, I noticed a 130" class whitetail bedded down below me and I almost got a shot on him too  :chuckle:

Anyway, he's just a good eater, nothing special in the antler department. I'm not a great elk hunter like some on here so I was more than happy to take him. For those of you who say, "I'm done with Washington, Idaho here I come." Maybe take a drive over and hike around to get a feel of the land first. It's no picnic over there and the tag is spendy!

Nice one.
"When my bow falls, so shall the world. When me heart ceases to pump blood to my body, it will all come crashing down. As a hunter, we are bound by duty, nay, bound by our very soul to this world. When a hunter dies we feel it, we sense it, and the world trembles with sorrow. When I die, so shall the world, from the shock of loosing such a great part of ones soul." Ezekiel, Okeanos Hunter

Nice work!  Out of state tags do sting the pocketbook a little bit, don't they?

That wasn't my first shot unfortunately. First shot was high on the opposite shoulder. He was laying there suffocating so I sped things along.

After gorging on round steaks a few nights, I don't really mind that I burned a $400 tag on a spike  :chuckle:

When he says log hopping maneuvers he really meant he did a spinning back flip as he released his arrow, to make it challenging because he is the might Jon and pure champion blood courses through his veins 8)

Good job buddy!  Now on to that cow tag for some more hammer time
