Finally got my first archery deer
« on: September 19, 2016, 09:29:09 PM »
I've put about 5 seasons into archery hunting off and on and finally tagged one. Fork horn blacktail.  I've got to say, blacktail seems to taste better than eastern whitetail.

Retrieval was hard though.  I didn't find him until about midnight.  Not as much of a blood trail as I get from a rifle, and the rain didn't help at all.  I was trailing him by looking for blood on the bottoms of the fern leaves.  Never did find the front half of the arrow, but I did find the back half about 10 yards from where I shot him.  It was a double lung shot that got some arteries near the heart, but it did hit the knuckle between the should blade and upper leg on the way out.  I'm thinking it would have passed through if I had missed the bone cleanly.  Not going to complain though. I'm only shooting 54 lbs at 28" and I still got a hole in both sides despite striking a pretty big bone.

Nice work.  Any BT is a trophy as they can be a challenge to hunt.

I see what you did there.  lol  :chuckle:

Nice deer by the way, any animal taken with a bow is a trophy IMHO especially your first.

Congrats on your first deer with a bow! And being a Blacktail buck makes it really cool too!
