Meat Grinder
« on: September 28, 2016, 10:12:12 AM »
I'm in the market for a meat grinder and would like some input from other hunters that have used various ones over the years. I had one from Waring, but the motor couldn't handle the volume that I was trying to put through it.

What brands, models, motor power, etc. should I be looking for?

Which specific ones do you like?

I always get bashed on here for this and I know people are looking for quality... but my Tasin TS-108 takes everything I throw at it.  Its fast, never had a hiccup.  Multiple family members have used it for a ton of different things and it roars right through the meat.  Loud... very loud, but aside from that, no concerns.

If price is a consideration, this will not let you down.

I'm getting ready to buy an older cast design online with a combination v belt wheel and handle. I have a 1 horse eletric sitting around and I think I can get the grinder and sausage making nozzles for $80 ish. I'll post more details tonight.

Cabelas just changed their grinders, so you can't see the exact model I have.  I would go with more of a commercial unit, probably in the $400 retail range unless you can afford better.  Cabelas often has them on sale and you can stack coupons which could make it the price leader by a comfortable margin.

I have the 1/2 hp, regular price was $409, got it on sale for $299, ended up with floor model which gave me another 10% plus I had a coupon for another $30 off if I remember right.  I would have a hard time feeding meat in faster than it can grind it, the machine runs quiet and cool and I am 100% happy with it.

Be careful with the hp ratings, unless you are spending $400ish, the 1/2 hp rating is a total joke.  It should weigh somewhere in the 50 pound range.

This is year 5 with it.  Between myself, family, aunts/uncles we've probably put 600 lbs of meat through it (just a guess).  And I'm always running my burger through twice to get the right mix and I'm not double counting that.  It takes it as fast as I can feed it.  It comes with some cool attachments.  I've got the cabelas burger paddy press that I use too which is kind of fun.  Its honestly the best $150 I've ever spent.  I got one for my bro down in Texas where you can shoot a lot more deer and he's also had a strong record with it.  Its also small enough that you can keep it under the counter somewhere in the kitchen.  Might be worth a shot for the price.  I've been very pleased.

I have a LEM #5 big bite that works great. It can go through meat faster than I can load it. I cut everything into 1/2 in strips and just feed them in the tube. If I could do it again I would go for a #8 but stick with LEM, I've had no issues with my grinder and it has done lots of animals in the last year that I've had it. Going with a larger size will allow a regrind to go quicker. I did an initial grind of 45lbs in 15 mins two days ago from whole meat, doing a second grind typically doubles my time or triples it if I'm stuffing casings.

I have a LEM 5lb sausage stuffer on the way to make the sausage stuffing process quicker. But I think (speculative) if you went with a #8 unit the unit would be quick enough to do both jobs efficiently.

I am 100% satisfied with LEM products, but bigger holes = faster grinds. The #8 is .35 hp my #5 is .25 and thats plenty of power to chew through anything. Also LEM is all stainless steel, this is one of the main reasons I went with it.

I would strongly suggest going with a #22 throat size, whatever you buy.  8-10 lbs a minute is no problem with that size.  1HP too.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

Is that website the only website to purchase it at? I like the grinder you're talking about, but I'm leary due to the return policy. But honestly, it looks and sounds like the best bang for the buck...

I think its a "crappy imported brand/design".  The kind of thing you'd get off of Alibaba in lots of 100 or so.  I believe it is made in Taiwan.  For that reason, it is the only website I've ever seen it offered at.  Its one of those things where I don't think that all asian products are junk, but there are enough of them and a wide lack of reviews that we have no idea which ones can be trusted or not.  I think in this case, these are pretty good.  Lots of good reviews (one at least here, and one from my brother).  I don't know what their return policy is, but I've never had issue with mine.

It is kind of a risk, but at $150 I thought it was worth it to me.  Now on year 5 I'm down to a $30 per year investment.  I would be shocked if I ever had an issue in the next 5 with it at this point.  I have pretty high faith in it.

I have the Cabelas 1hp commercial grinder which is a branded Weston.  I've put over 2000lbs through it in the last 3 years from elk, deer, pork and beef and haven't had a single issue.  Well worth the 500ish investment and the ability to get parts and pieces almost anywhere. Not that I've had to buy and parts yet.

I have about half of the volume you have through yours, but I agree 100%.  The Cabelas 1HP grinder is the best thing I have ever bought for butchering my own meat.  Which ever grinder you get, get a foot pedal for it!

check out this thread for a good idea of the Cabala's carnivore.

Still loving mine, it's been through 2 bear and multiple deer and a large hog and 2 bushels of tomatoes

I inherited my Dad's Universal manual crank meat grinder and use it often.  I can grind 10 pounds in no time.

Don't understand why folks think you must have an electric, but then I will only grind 10 pounds at a time.

So we can feed the grinder with one hand and hold our beer with the other  :chuckle:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.
