Idaho unit 18 trailer camping
« on: October 13, 2016, 03:24:26 PM »
Does anyone know of some good spots in the unit to camp in a camp trailer while hunting there.  I leave on sunday for my mule deer hunt.

Thanks,
Dan

Depends how and where you want to hunt. Plenty of places. Could go from north end at Pittsburg landing to the south end at heavens gate. Lots of areas in between. Basically find a wide spot in the road.
Any idea where you want to hunt?

You could probably camp off of Rapid River Road just south of Riggins. What is your point of entry going to be?

I was wondering what your point of entry is to?

You could stop by the Slate Creek Ranger Station and ask one of the folks at the front desk. Most of the guys down there are hunters and would be more then happy to help.

I don't have a specific spot that I'm going to stay,  I've got about 5 areas that I'm going to check out.  We are going a day early so we can spend some time doing some scouting.  Any info is appreciated!

Thanks,
Dan

Heavens gate is where I plan on starting out at, anyone know if I can get a 28ft camp trailer up there?

I know guys that drag stock trailers up there but its a long ways up. Getting up might not be that bad, getting out could be difficult. Snow comes in fast up there.

Was just up 7 devils. Its 16 miles to the top but the road is great. Plenty of room up top to camp and park the traile . Just don't pull into the windy saddle campground with your trailer. Trail heads heading north into some great country

We saw one whitetail buck in the canyons just above Pittsburg landing on the way down the hill couldn't get a shot. Saw a fair amount of mule deer does, not no bucks. Don't drive the 1st 10 miles of deer creek road right before dark. It will anger you. We saw probably 30 whitetail bucks on the private land. One was really big  :chuckle:

just as you cross into nat forest on the way up to heavens gate there is a few places you can camp with a trailer. Watch the weather.. that road is a white knuckler once it snows towing a trailer up with no where to turn around. Lot of people camp with trailers all the way up race creek and up top.

Pittsburg landing to me is a zoo and would not hunt mule deer there unless I was in a jet boat going up

Thanks everyone for the info!  I'll probably park down lower somewhere and hunt up higher.  I'm guessing they got snow up high in the last day or so and don't want to risk taking the trailer up there.
