First of the season for me, turned out to be a double!  Third stand of the evening, one came in tentatively, stopped at about 150, and obligingly turned broadside.  I punched her ticket with my .22 Hornet, waited thirty seconds or so, and gave some puppy distress.  Almost immediately caught movement to my immediate left, a big male was standing at about 100 feet.  I was prone, but slowly turned the muzzle to his position.....all the while he's looking right at me.  He turned to go, but too slowly!

Fur is good, skin side is white, they are prime.

I'd appreciate hearing what your load is also.  My first coyote was also with a .22 Hornet and handloads.

The rifle is a Ruger model 77/22, topped with a Leupold 2x7 'scope.  This time out, I was using 45 gr. factory Remington ammo...soft points.  I sell all my coyote pelts, and I am trying to keep pelt damage to a minimum.  I  have handloads with ballistic tips, but if they don't hit squarely, they can really open up.. For example, last season, I had a hard charger at about a hundred feet that wouldn't stop, even when I yelled at him, so I took the shot.  It hit just at the lower jawline, and ripped about a five inch hole, and penetrated just enough to kill.  I think a soft point would have performed better, in this case.

Over the years, I have had less damage with soft points, but of course there are more exit wounds, but they are usually not too severe.  I'm still playing with loads.

I had excellent results with the 40 grain Sierra spitzer.  It may still be made but I was doing my shooting with it in 1977 and later.  My complaint with it was it didn't expand.  You might want something like that for your use.  My load back then was (as I remember) 11.7 grains of 4227 for about 2500something fps.

Thanks Bill, that's good information.  It sounds like what I'm looking for.  I actually used FMJ bullet handloads in the seventies, in my .222.  No pelt damage there!
