Hunting closed units

Was grouse hunting today in 448 and ran into a couple separate hunters heading in for late buck.  We told them we didn't think 448 was open for late buck and I pulled up the regs on my phone to double check.  I've check the regs probably 6 times since then to make sure I'm not crazy.  Just makes me wonder how frequently closed units are hunted.  I get that regs can be a little overwhelming, but seasons are pretty well laid out.  Im not sure how lenient they would be ... it its just better to be aware.

There it is.  None of them mentioned special permits tho or corrected us when we kept saying late buck, so I'm guessing they didn't have it.  Along with having at least 2 if not 3 permit holders at the same gate within 5 minutes is highly unlikely with 10 permits given.  And Im guessing orange isnt required since its not a MF general season, so there was also another group of 2 that we didnt ask if they were hunting or what they were hunting.  Potentially 5 people at one gate within 5 minutes ...

Ya "might" get points if they're convicted of poaching. Ya don't get points just because they're hunting a closed season.

Orange is required for deer modern firearm anything.

Doesnt surprise me one bit. I've run into people with high power in firearm restricted areas EVERY year. ESPECIALLY so during late buck. I always educate them. Sometimes it matters sometimes it doesn't. The regs are not easy to figure out but it's frustrating as someone who takes the time to figure it out and do it right.

Makes me wonder, how many guys hunting a premier late tag unit have been checked out by the warden for that area during their hunt? I have drawn one quality buck tag for 460 ( far from what i would consider a premier unit) and did not see a warden once in 5 days of hunting popular areas.

Highly doubt they had the permit.  As I mentioned before they never mentioned it and didnt correct us.  One group said they thought the season was open for another day(today) which would be the general season and not the permit that ended yesterday.

I was scouting my Mudflow elk tag unit a week or so before opening day and stopped to talk to a young guy in camo parked/looking down into one of the unit's draws.  After I talked to him a bit it became obvious that he was looking for deer.  He said he was aware that it was an elk tag area but assured me that it has always been open for deer and bear  .  During my actual hunt there, I saw more than a few hunters driving on the Mudflow side of the ridge; I guess they were just enjoying the scenery......right.  The LEOs can't cover all the areas and I would guess that they concentrate on more hunter populated area to check rule compliance.  I would venture a guess and say that quite a bit of lawlessness occurs in the closed to general hunting units.
