BBD!!! The buck of my dreams!!
« on: November 22, 2016, 02:45:28 PM »
I've dreamed of taking a buck like this since the first year I started hunt over 12 years ago.  I drew the Patterson muzzleloader buck tag and my expectations weren't set to high until the week prior to the opening day.  I left my house at 3:45 am to go down and scout the area one week before the opening day to see where the deer were.  I met up with a friend that knew the area Well but it was so foggy we couldn't see more then 100 yards.  We hiked and drove around the refuge for a few hours but didn't see much with the fog.  Finally it started to lift so we began glassing and spotted two really nice bucks.  A 3x4 that was wide and tall and a 5x5 that was heavy and dark. Right away I said that's the one I want. The next week at at work and home my thoughts were consumed by this buck and hoped I'd find him Saturday morning.  Opening morning 20 minutes into the hunt there he was all by himself.  We worked towards him but he circled back and busted us.  We then found him 30 minutes later with 15 does and a big 3x3 but so many eyes made it really hard.  Five different times we were between 200-250 yards from him but couldn't get any closer with all the eyes.  We walked, ran, and crawled all day and as dark fell upon us we felt defeated and tired.  My brother and I went back to the camper, ate dinner and talked about our plan.  We knew we just need our plan to work just once and gor a little luck.  We went to bed at 7:30 and slept like babies.  The next morning we were glassing up does about 800 yards away then I spotted him all by himself but he spotted us too.  We back behind a little hill to watch him as he later bedded down but he finally got nervous and headed away from us about 600 yards and began to feed then proceed to bed down.  Perfect, I decided to go way out and around him and come in from behind him but was worried because there was barely any cover but I had to try.  My brother stayed back to watch.  I got to within 150 yards of him and crawled to 75 yards of him, he had no idea I was there.  I got ready, got an extra cap out just incase the first one didn't fire. 30 minutes later he stood up perfectly broadside and boom, he dropped in his tracks.  I hurried and reloaded but as I walked up on him he was done.  Glad my brother was with me on this hunt of of a lifetime for me! And for the help of friends!!

That's the best Paterson Buck I've seen taken from there in quite some time....
