Traditional muzzleloader success??

Yea.

I have a traditional Hawken that has a cut down barrel for thick timber. I shot this at about 10 yards with a .54 caliber, pure lead conical bullet. The only thing that worries me is th\e hammer has failed to strike hard enough in the past, but when I use Remington caps it doesn't happen.

Outhouse, I have seen this same problem with the hammer not hitting hard enough for a couple different reasons. one was the cap nipple combination, the cap not setting down tight on the nipple for the 1st hit. after the 1st hit the cap was down tight and would go off on the 2nd hit.
The other reason I came across, was a hair line crack in the stock that had just enough give to not go off all the time. Good luck getting that one figured out. Nice buck by the way. Squid

I was able to hunt only one day this year, shot 6 point white tail with Traditions .50 Hawken kit (sorry no picture).

Last year same rifle shot a 10 point and a doe.  Two years ago just one doe.  All Indiana deer, which I could have used something a lot more modern (no laws against scopes and modern primers out here).  I love using a rifle I put together though and probably will never switch.

Just did an experiment. You were right my man!! So because of a bit of gunk on the nipple it wasn't seating all the way and yes on the second hammer drop it goes everytime. I still like the remington caps probably just out of superstition though at this point. Thanks!!

This years deer with a Lyman Trade Rifle. I paddled half a mile like this sitting on top of the deer.

.54 Lyman Deer Stalker, 1 shot, 90 yards, 375 grain copper bullet (cannot think of the name at the moment) with 90 grains of 2F.

Thanks! My best so far. Yes, his head was a little twisted on the hemlock sapling but I straightened it out to get a better look at him and for the photo.
