Blewett Pass Area Elk hunting

Hi hunters, I'm not looking for anyone's favorite hunting spot or honey hole. Just asking for a little help. I am a bow hunter, but my son is 16, just getting into hunting himself. Lots of folks have told me to take him up 97 towards blewett pass for hopes of shooting an elk but I have no clue for that area where to even begin.  So if any information could be shared as to mile markers , parks or good sights to stop and walk out we can do the rest.  We're going into this blind, no time to scout because his interest in hunting has peaked so as a dad I just want to get him out there. So if you any information as to where to go please share. If not thanks for taking the time to read this and good luck hunting.

A lot depends on the weather. On a normal year, I would say to stay down lower but this year with the lack of snow the elk should be more spread out and still up higher. There are tons of spur roads on both sides of the pass that you can explore. Just make sure you know which unit they are in so you can verify pertinent rules and dates.

Liberty is off of 97, quite a few roads leading out of there.  Just up the road at the top of the pass there is a snopark and roads leading out from there up to lions rock and all the way back down to Ellensburg.  Lots of good elk country out that way as well.

I have property near liberty and just be careful and make sure you know where you are. There are lots of little pieces of private property all over. If it were me and I would go just past liberty and go west on one of those spur roads. Tons of area to get out and hunt.

i was just up there for the cow season, and im sure there are some onsie, two-sie groups around, but the big heard got shot up opening day of spikes, and left the country side. maybe they moved back in after the chaos stopped too.  didnt see an elk in 4 days between 5 of us and we didnt road hunt.  fair amount of sign, but it was either old sign or they moved at night.  not to talk you out of the area, just giving you my input from last week.

Any starting point you would recommend? It's gravy if we get something but just to get him out there and see animals would make the hunt. Thanks for your info

I see at least three starting points on this thread already and actually more if you count every spur road that is off of 97.  You only have a weekend so you can't hit them all.  Pick one and cover some ground, I am sure you will do just fine.

If someone broadcasts on the open forum "I saw elk off of mile post X, up FS road XXXX" you and a whole bunch of others will be covering the same ground and there won't be elk one around.

The information you need has already been posted, you have directions to good elk country, even the elevation to go to.  All you have to do now is get out there and start hunting.

Between Liberty and Blewett you can just pick a road. Some do loops and come back to the highway, some go all the way to Eberg. There are only a half dozen or so, just pick one and see where it goes. If you head to Red Top you can poke around and try to find thunder eggs while you're up there.

Stop in one of the ranger stations and pick up a cle elum/ Wenatchee district map. It has some of the private property on it and all the spur roads.

Make sure you know what unit you are in at all times. I think 97 can put you onto 3 separate units?

 Just make sure yer not bow hunting elk in the mission unit. If ya just pick any road off the pass

That's crazy to me that there r people that would go to spot in mile marker that is mentioned on this forum.  That's a lot of desperate faith

You are in yakima, plenty of places around there to go and scout out.
