Downriggers

Just got a new boat for fishing on the sound, but it doesn't have downriggers on it yet. It does have both the Scotty and Cannon mounts, but only Scotty plugs. I'm trying to decide between Cannon and Scotty to outfit it with, I'm leaning towards Scotty with braid so I don't have to worry about electrolysis, but I can't decide what model to go with, HS or standard. I've also always run cannon before and I'm a little nervous about the quality difference of the Scotty. Any input is appreciated, thanks!

I fish a lot and keep my boat moored in Neah Bay all summer fishing 3-4 days a week, I run Scottys. I don't like cannons because if they get wet they are prone to frying their circuits and quit working, I'm not talking about a fuse the chip in them will fry. It's about $100 to get a new chip put in. This happens 3 times in one season for one of my friends who runs a charter boat then he sold his cannons.

Also, Scotty will replace everything for free or repair for free. I once backed into my garage and split one in half on the garage door, even after I told them what happened they repaired it for free.

The high speed Scottys work great with 15lb balls and if you get the low speed I suggest running a 12lb ball. I also run 450ft of 200lb braid as my downrigger line.

I've owned both, I prefer the Scotty 1106's...fwiw.

Thanks, I didn't know that about the warranty on the Scotty that's awesome, I think I'm gonna go with 1106 cause we run 12lb balls, thanks again

I have 4 1106s. I've never had a mechanical issue with any of them.  My only complaint is their retrieve speed.  If you're fishing deep (in the sound or on the coast) you'll spend a lot of time waiting on them.

I'll be the dissenting  voice I guess.  Maybe it is different with electric Scotties but I hate the sideways movement to reel up the manuals and the clutch release is cumbersome and jerky compared to my Cannons. I've also never had any problems with chips frying from getting wet, and I pretty much leave my downriggers laying around when not in use, sometimes outside....   

However, I'm not sure how the Scotty electrical connectors hold up, but I've not been happy with the Cannon ones, even the new style and yes, the Cannon warranty kind of sucks.

I also originally went with Cannon as I could network them into my depthfinder and control them from in the cabin, All Up is a great function when the bottom all of a sudden comes up.....

Scotty 1106 on my Edge Marine Sport OS. No need to spend money on high speed.

Currently running cable but will be switching braid.

scotty is the only way to go, I see more cannons at pawn shops than any other models, scotty has an incredible service department and parts are never far away.

if I couldnt get scotty, I would go with some Penn hand cranks, but wouldnt bother with anything else


however, with that being said, I have a commercial fishing hand troll gurdie on my boat
