First pheasant with my new 20ga
« on: January 02, 2017, 07:50:09 PM »
Went out in the snow to chase birds today. I bought a new Smith and Wesson 20 ga SxS a couple days ago, managed to knock down a rooster with it

Nice! We're the birds holding well in the snow? I always thought they held tight in deep snow but last time out they were flushing wild 70-100 yards out.

Depends on snow usually, if its a fresh soft snow they they hold good...but if it is crunchy what so ever then they are gone...

Nice work!  The snow has been kicking my and the dogs butt.  Getting old sucks.  How do you like that pack...I have read good things but never talked to anyone who actually owns one.

The tenzing is great vest, it's a little hard to get a pheasant in there with one hand though. Smaller birds drop right in.

Birds were holding pretty tight, they were all in deep thick cover though. Quail were flushing through the trees, could hardly get a shot on them. I'd agree with Ruger, fresh powder is good, crunchy snow they'll flush 100 yards out. I've had good luck on quail singles even in crunchy snow, but not whole coveys

Nice.  More gun pics/info?

S&W Elite Gold Class I 20ga 28" barrels, fixed chokes (I/C, M) single trigger, case hardened steel. Don't have more pics, I've only had it 4 days. I believe it was discontinued, but is similar if not the exact same gun as the Dickinson Estate and Webley & Scott model 2000.

Made by UTAS in Turkey...quality has come a long way since the Huglu inception many years ago.

Have a real nice AyA double in 20ga that looks like yours. But real doubles always have Two Triggers.
I also have a nice 1930's checz made 16ga and English/Midland 12ga that I hunt with.
I hunted the yak res a few weeks back during that cold snap but didn't do as well as you on finding quail. I haven't hunted it in a long time, guess I need to relearn it. Nice SxS.

And an English stock too, right? Strike two! This one has a half pistol grip. I've shot a few double trigger sxs's, I prefer a single trigger. Maybe one day I'll break my limit of $2k for a shotgun and get a true double... but I doubt it.

It's been a good one. Finally had some success with chukar, even shot a double on them my second trip out.

German on the left and Spanish Ugi on the right. Very well made Spanish guns with English configurations can be acquired for under 2k easily.  Single trigger guns definitely a bit faster, IMHO.
