Nisqually Reach Area Question
« on: January 14, 2017, 10:49:43 AM »
My girlfriend lives off of division road not far from the WDFW launch to the Nisqually reach.  The water is about 1 mile down the embankment to McCallister Creek.  We hear a lot of shots, I'm just curious how well you guys do?  Geese, ducks?  I'm not a waterfowl hunter or planning to be one.  Just curious due to what we hear on Sat mornings.  A PM is fine if you don't want to share publically.

I think most folks use the paved road.

I've hunted the Nisqually for over 25 yrs. Mixed bag of mostly puddle ducks. Used to be a lot better prior to the refuge removing all the dikes. Used to have a wintering population of approx 5000 cackler geese and close to the same in widgeon. Now it's a crap shoot plus it's gotten a lot busier with hunters also.

Didn't mean to sound so negative. It's got it's days and I still like it for a close to home hunt.

boat in only.  can be good when it's really cold.  otherwise, the ducks don't have much reason to stay in the area you can hunt.  they'll fly into the off limits area of the refuge or across I5 where the well off guys can shoot them.  not much cover out there either.

nisqually sort of follows the typical public hunting scheme in this state.  the areas with public access look like a scorched wasteland, while across the deadline is where all the good habitat is.  willapa is the same way.  can't say i blame them for blowing the dikes, salmon are in trouble, ducks aren't, but it's no good if you're a waterfowler.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

We walked the entire refuge on Saturday morning. Lots of shooting while we were there. The wife said hunting must be good, I said, how do you know that, a single duck could be the reason for those twenty shots we just heard  :chuckle:. It was a great walk for the morning, pretty cool to see all the geese and ducks for sure.
