Ok so here is a few question for you guys in the know with steel. I know files can make great knives etc.

What about wrenches, hammers, circle saw blades, pruners etc? I see this stuff at auction all the time and goes super cheap so I am always thinking about grabbing it for when I dive into steel one day.

I don't have a lot of experience carpsniper but i think that would be a great way to get started, the tools you mentioned would be high carbon alloys and can be forged into useful cutting  tool of your design.  As you gain more experience you could then order the specific stock for the right application.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. Stuff goes cheap and before getting to the spendy metal, rail road spikes and old tools, mower blades etc.

I was looking at some shovels and I love ulu blades. So I might have to pick up some at the next auction

Files are good knife steel. Spring steel can be very good as well

Lots of the big sawmill circular saws are not the same base steel as the teeth. Sometimes the teeth are even carbide. But the base steel is often 5160, which is a decent performer but can rust terribly easily.

I just made a Damascus blade with a Nicholson file and some 1080 from a disc blade... not dissimilar enough, but if welded up great. Going to make a larger pukko out of it, I'll post a pic...

This is the polished Damascus blade...

First forged damascus. Nicholson file and 1080 disc blade. 18 layers. No nickle so it didn't etch very distinct, so I polished it.

Nice job.  I'm saving all my HC steel scraps for doing pattern weld one of these days

Rain....

Pardon the dumb question but how will it hold up as in the edge? My daughter is 8, just starting to shoot....maybe she needs a knife as well.

It's 1080 and a Nicholson file, hardened really well, should be pretty darn excellent, actually.
