Moving - backcountry hunt opportunities on the Peninsula?
« on: May 23, 2017, 04:41:57 PM »
I'm moving from the snohomish area (been hunting ALW for the past 5 years), out to gig harbor...

I understand that the wilderness out there is open for the high hunt, but my question is more "how" related.

What are the main differences between hunting high country blacktail on the west side and mulies on the east?

I've always wanted to try it. Please share your experiences and pictures once you start scouting trips.

TY for relieving some of the ALW pressure

I hunted Buckhorn for several years during the high hunt. Wonderful experiences. Far fewer people than the eastern wilderness areas.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

Skyval - where I hunt In the ALW, i usually see one other person… maybe...And they usually aren't hunting.  So I don't know if I am "helping you out" much

Tactics-wise, anybody experienced major differences/similarities.

Pretty much just lots thicker below timberline.

For the High Buck Hunt, be on top -the very top- before light. Glass and stalk from there. Simple, effective, sometimes difficult. Very fun hunt, but maybe that's because there's so little opportunity to hunt open country in the west, hunting the ridge tops seems like utopia!

Be prepared to be wet. It can be very thick, good binoculars can be the difference in seeing a blacktail ear twitch or not in thick cover.
