I have caught dozens. Some where the line passed through the fish and still had some line hanging out its mouth. The best one was my buddy lost a really nice trout and ended up catching the same fish 2weeks later with his hook in it.

I caught 2 this week with line out the mouth. Maybe people are using bait and then want to fish past the limit of 5 either caught or released so they just cut the line short and keep fishing?

A few years ago I got a nice summer run up on the peninsula that has somebody's drift setup hanging out of its mouth. About a 2' leader to a swivel and a slinky. Funny part was the fish never actually bit, my 2/0 hook managed to go right through the eye on the swivel, which was barely bigger than the diameter of the hook. Lucky!

There are a lot of people with Walmart special rods anymore that don't really have a clue about fishing and assume that since a rod had 8lb mono strung on it ten years ago it is still good to go. I have seen a few dinkuses pull out their rod, tie on their preferred tackle, and promptly break the line setting the hook. They repeat that another time or two and are convinced the water is full of monster fish, never once realizing their 8lb mono is more like 2lb. They finally land a 12" after stripping their reel to fresh line and are convinced they have been breaking off the "big one", never once realizing there are a couple more 12" fish swimming around trailing their gear.

I broke one off one day and caught him with my rig still in his mouth the next. No one said they were very smart fish!

People that fish for stocked trout are not usually the best at tying knots or playing fish. And yes caught a few skinny holdovers with hooks and a couple feet of leader hanging out their bung hole.

I caught 120 pound halibut with 3 jigs in it's mouth, only one was mine.  The other 2 had been there for at least a few days to a week.

Seen it plenty of times. I have heard some people that dont want to keep the fish sometimes cut the line if the fish swallows the hook, better survival rate I guess. Best one I have seen was fishing Coho with my brother a couple years back. Fishing bobber and eggs through a deep hole he hooked a dark coho. Didn't want to net and and while trying to unhook it, the line broke and off it swam. Two days later back at the same hole I hooked up, and caught the same coho with his hook with pink yarn still stuck in the corner of the mouth. This time I was able to remove both sets of hooks.

Caught a steelhead trout at Blue Crk. one year. My drift setup hooked the top eye of a barrel swivel of a setup which had broke off in the steelies mouth. The setup was about two feet long. I did buy a loto ticket on the way home.....Frm. No luck on the ticket.

That happened to me there once too.

I landed another there that had broken somebody off where my jig had trapped a corkie against a swivel- no wrap, nothing hooked threw anything- just holding the corkie against the swivel at the end of the leader.
