Aluminum drive shaft U-joint replace-- Job done--
« on: May 28, 2017, 02:57:31 PM »
I've changed out a number of u-joints over the years using a big C-clamp and a socket to push the u-joint, but they were all in steel drive shafts.  The u-joint in my ford van is bad and I need to replace it.  Are there any pit-falls working with an aluminum yoke?

Thanks

Just a softer metal.  I scratched mine up a little with some channel locks, so had to wrap with a towel to hold steady.  I used a wood dowel to punch out the caps.  The nice thing for the re-install since the new joint was a little big to angle in...I was able to round down the aluminum lip in just a few minutes with a dremel tool.

The coated u-joints came in yesterday and it took about 2 hours, the old one was rusted in pretty bad but it went well.  I used a large C-clamp and an 1 1/4" socket.
After the first shot the rest are just noise.
