Lick Creek GMU 175
« on: June 15, 2017, 12:23:50 AM »
I have been considering learning the Lick Creek area to Elk hunt. I have been thru it a number of times, but have never drilled down to put together an Elk hunt. I plan to get out and start scouting next week, and would like some advice. I put in for a Quality Bull special permit with 21 points. I'm trying to be optimistic and tell myself I'm going to get drawn this year!

Where would you suggest I could go, which has some descent lookout points where big bulls are known to be spotted?

I prefer areas, which I can drive out to a point and glass, or park and walk out a ways to look around.

Any suggestions of areas, which tend to produce big bulls that a solo hunter can get too?

Thanks for the help...

Good luck on your draw but don't count your chicks before their hatched.

Which season did you apply for? Rifle, archery or muzzleloader? This will make a big difference in where you will find the elk and the bulls in particular. I've been hunting this unit for about the last 20 years and have seen a fair amount of big bulls and while this unit is slightly "easier" to access than say the Wenaha or Mountain View units it also gets more pressure from the nearby Natives. You will need to get away from the open roads to find truly big bulls in this unit.

So did you end up drawing your Lick Creek tag?

I drew Dayton Quality Bull - Modern Firearm

So cancel my Lick Creek request. It was my second choice. First choice was Dayton. I thought I had 21 points in the draw. I drew with 20.

I have hunted Marengo for about 30 years and spent a reasonable amount of time in Dayton. I will start scouting next week. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

you drew an awesome tag for sure! Probably would have bee 98% of peoples choice out there between the two....... but the governor's tag holder has been known to hunt that lick creek unit in recent years...... just saying...
