I am a Petzl guy, my headlamps are abused like a rented mule and they simply last.  The last one ended up in the ocean submerged three times during various Goruck events and completely flooded, I rinsed dried and it still works two years later.  I've broken or been let down by most other major brands.  I'm sure they are fine for the average use, it depends on what you are using them for.  In my case, if it goes down my life sucks and I place a very high priority on durability and reliability.

I am also a big fan of AAA batts, they are cheap and easy to have spares.  I don't like to recharge, forget to recharge, spend a ton of money or have trouble buying them on the road because they are some strange size.

My newer model has three brightness settings and the brightest is more than I need, but it depends on your definition of "bright."  There are certainly brighter lamps out there.

For more horsepower, I have a rechargeable for my road bike that I use as a handheld to find duck blinds that I don't know where are or wounded animals.

Its not cheap but another vote for Petzl. I love mine, I have the Reactik. I have been hiking out with buddies who were raving about how great their headlamps were only to ask what mine was and where I got it part way into the dark hike because it is so much brighter. I love that Reactik feature too, it automatically dims when it hits another light. So you don't blind your buddies, or if you pull up your GPS or cell phone you can actually see the screen. Then you look into the darkness and it brightens back up and floods the light in front of you. I have abused mine for two years now and have had no issues.

the best headlamps ive ever used are from zebralight. the h32w is the one i used most as its very small and light on my head, and batteries for it are cheap. the other one i use is the h600 mark ___(i dont know what version they are up to now) it uses rechargables and its stupid fricken bright. i mean brighter than your car headlights easily, waaaaay brighter than any streamlight or petzl ive ever used

Another vote for Black Diamond here, currently using the Storm. Although I'm thinking of picking up one of the Petzl Reactik in the future.

I love this light. Small, compact and SUPER bright. The red LEDs are more of a reading/map light than a walking light.

Self containing battery/charging port so you don’t have any wires and a battery pack on the back part to worry about.
