Big Sevens

There are a lot of high performance 7mm rounds out right now. I have a lack of 7mm Cal guns so I am going to jump in and build 2.   

For the smaller of the 2 I am looking at the 7 Lrm, 7x300wm

For the big guy I am looking at the 7x300 Norma ai or 7 mm hulk.

Both geared for the 180-195's.

Any thoughts or people that are shooting these rounds? Don't need to hear about overbore or barrel life because neither concern me.

Any other rounds in the same class you like?

One that most have never heard of but is a commercially available cartridge with good and available Norma brass is the 7mm Blaser Mag.  I had Defensive Edge Rifles build me one last fall.  It has a little more case capacity than the 7 Rem mag and the case is slightly shorter and fatter than the 7Rem mag as well as it is NOT a belted case.

Mine has a 26 inch 1-8tw Hart #4 barrel and was built on a Rem LA 700 and even with it's laminated wood stock and heavy NF NXS 5.5-22x50 scope it makes for a very nice medium weight rifle with very light recoil.

Shawn Carlock w/Defensive Edge Rifles has the reamer and mine was done in less than three months.  He used his proprietary throat design that he calls "+P" (no it's not just a really long freebore) on mine which allows it to shoot a little faster. 

I'm using 68.5gr of RL26 with 180gr Berger Hunting VLD and out of my 26in barrel it shoots 3050fps into the .3's.

Thanks for the response. The cartridges listed are not set in stone. Every time I find one I like I end up finding something just as interesting.

Unless you're looking for a repeater, the 7 RUM is an excellent cartridge that will have roughly the same capacity (possibly a bit more) than an improved Norma case. The Norma case would probably match or maybe beat the the RUM if you wanted to shoot it at an OAL of less 3.800".

My 7mm RUM was a single shot and throated for the 200gr Wildcat bullets so I loaded them to an OAL of 4.1" and I got some impressive velocities out of it and my Rem brass was good for about 7 firings before I tossed it.

Don't forget the 7 stw. I run a 6.5 and 7 stw and have been some of my best shooting rifles and are great performers.

I too am lacking a big 7 in my stable. I have some big 30's that are hard to beat but if we're to build a dedicated longrange 7 it would be a RUM pushing the 195 EOL's. 

A buddy just had a 7STW built out and that thing shoots lights out.

Big 7 I would aim for something using 195's at 3000+

Don't forget about the 28 Nosler which is a twin to the STW and 7-300 Wby mag. but without being a belted case.

I looked at doing a few different, larger case capacity, 7's before I settled on the 7 Blaser Mag but I knew I didn't want this gun to have over a 26in. pipe and those others really do need at least a 28in. tube to use all that case capacity.

Hey Yorke, do you by chance know/remember what the length of those .284 200gr Wildcat bullets is.  Curious if they are longer than the Berger 195's.

Just measured my last 200 wildcat bullet and it's 1.593"
