Reupholstering using deer hide?
« on: September 01, 2017, 08:27:12 PM »
Figured this might be a decent place to ask, I was thinking of reupholsteting a sofa of mine in deer hide.  Ive reupholstered quite a bit of stuff but never with deer hide, how is it to work with and tips or recommendations? Basically is it just going to be a pain in my behind?

I covered a couple cushioned bar stools about 30 years ago and they are still going strong.  However, I did not have to sew any hides together as you would have to do.  A whole couch is going to need a lot of hides.
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

PM elkboy. He has deer hides all over the house and might have some insight for you.

I've had two rocking chairs reupholstered using an elk hide and both chairs turned out great.  One chair was from my Grandfathers dental office and the other was from an estate sale.  Both chairs were taken apart and refinished locally.  I also paid a local professional upholster in Wenatchee to tack on the hide as I wanted it done right.  Stuffing/padding was required in some spots. Good luck, it's well worth it, especially if it's from a special hunt/animal (mine was a Wa OTC P&Y bull).
