SW Wa land closures
« on: September 09, 2017, 09:16:20 AM »
Came down for elk opener this morning and all the gates are marked "no public access"  due to fire danger. This was the first I'd heard of it. Anybody have more information ? How much is closed ?

Pretty much every timber company other then weyco. But you gonna need a $300 permit for entry. State and national forest are open.No camp fires or open fires allowed.  If you hurry you might be able to find a parking spot still.

Why come all the way down here to look for elk? I grew up in Kitsap Co. and remember having plenty of elk around. Are the woods closed up there now too?

The closest would be across in the olympics. I've been hunting down here for maybe the past 6 years. So we know the area down here best. The land up north is national forest mainly so we thought about heading up, but it's a new area. I'm still in high school so I kinda just go wherever I get drug to. It all depends.

Just came back from SW Washington last night. Most timber company land is still closed (even after rain on Saturday night). Tried hunting state land and it was silly.

 :yeah:
I thought last year was bad, but with all the gates closed there were hunters everywhere on state land. First time in 6 years I had other hunters actually in the woods in my "secret" spot.
Trucks parked at my camp. Moving on, plan a,b,c,... Finally found a spot to myself, but did not last long...Sure am glad my vacation starts this Friday.

Make sure if you go in early you look everywhere within a 100 yard radius! Learned the hard way!

Holly, a long long time ago. My buddy shot one on his property in Grapeview (not Kitsap) a couple of years ago.

I've heard very distant rumors of a possible small herd in the green mountain watershed. Also stories about them occasionally being seen or hit with cars in port orchard.
