DNR Road Status in 621?
« on: November 01, 2017, 01:39:35 PM »
Still have a deer tag in my pocket, no muley buck for me. So looking to get a day or two in the woods during the late buck mid November. Trying to find out status of DNR roads in 621, are they generally open or locked? No idea why I'm drawn to 621 aside from reading harvest trends. Anyone have insight or know what part of the DNR site to look on? Thanks!

Some of the side roads are gated but all of the main roads are open. Tons of clear cuts in that area, look at the aerial views in google maps. I would suggest getting Onx maps and downloading your hunting areas offline because there is a lot of private land that is on the edges as well as right in the middle of some of the DNR land.

621 is huge.  It goes all the way from Port Angeles to Lake Cushman. Lots of high country and lots of low country.  Any ideas where you are thinking about heading?

Looking at the more southern portion, Lake Cushman up to Lena Lake/Hamma Hamma

I've got OnX already so I'm squared away there. Saw all the clearcuts in the southern half and thought it might be worth looking in to since I have a vacation day or two that I can burn up still.

Same here. I hunted on the 30th and 31st all day long (opening hours to ending hours) and didn't see a single deer. I hit the clear cuts at first and last light and then was up in the mountains still hunting during the day.

Sorry.  Can't help you with 621 that far south.   I live in Port Angeles and have hunted it a lot from Discovery Bay to Port Angeles.  Last few years though I've been down in SW Washington hunting more.  My oldest son is DNR Forester down there and knows a lot about the area.  We see a lot more deer down there.  Seems like the cats have really cleaned things out up here.

That's why there is no harvest limits on cougars there. While I was deer hunting there last month I wanted to find a cougar more than I wanted to find a deer just so I could knock at least one out of the population.
