A legal set up on 5 acres
«

So I got access to a small plot on 5 acres. But not sure if it is big enough for a safe place to shoot. No houses near by but trapped by the hyway on one side and the Willipa hills trail on the the other. It is a strip of land about 600' foot wide between the two with the Chehalis river in the middle. Could put my back to the trial and shoot over highway. Looked and looked and just found that it was not legal to shoot over a road way and that you needed to be 150 yards away. Anyways a question for you all that are more experienced in setting up close to places like this

I don't know of any law that requires you to be 150 yards from a road. I'd probably try hunting it on stormy days when people aren't likely to be using the trail. 5 acres should be enough area to safely hunt ducks, as it would be about 100 yards by 200 yards, but of course it just all depends on where you're set up and which direction you're shooting. Best thing would be to shoot in an upward direction but you still definitely don't want to be shooting towards the highway or the trail. Without seeing it it's hard to say. Can you post an aerial photo of the property?

Draw a rectangle and a line for the road and a line for the trail and approx. Distances. I wouldn't post an areal photo.

If you rain pellets down on a roadway you will be ticketed for it. I wouldn't want to point a gun at a road that's only 150 yards away.

Back in the day 20 years ago we used to duck hunt this field, the area on the left would fill with water we would set up our blind between the water and I5.

Well it sounds questionable at the very least. Its not like there are ducks all over it, it would just be convenient. I will look at setting up on the highway side shooting over the trail.

I would call fish and wildlife and talk to them about it. I don't know anything about the trail you mentioned but if there is traffic there sign or no sign you could get that spot shut down. I know of a spot where it used to be a very popular target shooting spot but some horse group came in and decided they need an official trail close to the same area. Got it approved and one weekend they heard shot fall close to them while out on the trail now there is signs everywhere about not target shooting. Might not be the exact same but I would still and talk to fish and game.
