Unit 250 Tomorrow. Fools Errand?
« on: November 14, 2017, 09:42:23 PM »
I didn’t get meat down during the General season where I normally hunt. Now I see there’s some Any Elk units and I’m considering making the trip to unit 250 before I️t ends. Tomorrow is the last day.

Is this a fools errand? I’ve never been there and only armed with On X Maps so I keep off private property, I’m tempted to make a go at it.

You're extremely unlikely to find any elk but maybe just spending time in the mountains and getting some exercise is good enough? Do you have a cougar tag? Odds of killing a cougar might be better. If you only want meat in the freezer, I think your best bet would be to take the gas money you would have spent and buy some meat at Safeway.

It’s a modern firearm hunt and yes, I do have a cougar tag.

I’ve got three votes so far that say it’s a waste of hunting time, plus a six hour round trip. I’ve been thinking they are south of 90...since when we left Colockum, the WSDOT radio said to beware of all the elk migrating south over the highway.

Or maybe you'll get lucky.  Never know.

The season was established for that unit incase elk go the wrong way come the snows and end up in low land orchards. It wasn't established because of current elk populations. Only a crop depravation tool.

I’d take bobcats advice. Take your gas money and buy some T bones. Or go on an armed hike. You’re probably more likely to get struck by lightning than to see elk in that unit.

I agree with the consensus, I have hunted the unit for 30 years I hate to admit and I saw one track about 20 years ago, but would occasionally bump into someone actually hunting for them in the 250.

I have seen elk in GMU 250 four times in 16 years.  Only once during that open season, a cow and calf that I'm sure had recently crossed the Wenatchee River.  Same with a spike.  The 6x6 was near the GMU 245 boundary and may have been one of the rare elk that live in the east Cascades north of Highway 2.  I don't believe there are any resident elk that live in GMU 250.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

This is why I ask around before doing things. Even the people I know personally said about the same. Thanks, everyone.
Instead of hunting, I had breakfast with my lady before she goes to work. Definitely much better than getting up at 3am for the drive.

Apparently there are a few based on harvest reports.  2016 - 2, 2015 - 2, 2014 - 3, 2013 - 2, 2012 - 0, 2011 - 3, 2010 - 2.  I'd say go for it based on my deer season this year.  On a whim, I went the second Sunday in Oct to an area I very seldom see deer, let alone bucks.  I did see just one mulie and ended up with a 28 1/2" 4x4, my best ever.

A whole year and I’m finally understanding this. After another season of not harvesting I was revisiting the Any Elk units and had backup plans. I checked public lands in a few units and visited a couple. Definitely not going to be elk in many of those places.
