Terrible he was so close to his truck, this is a very sad situation.  Probably was disoriented and had no idea.  At first I figured he was hurt and couldn't walk out on his own.  Snow and fog can really mess with your bearings.  Get some sort of gps and mark your truck every time you go out no matter what.  We can all learn a lesson from this.

Anybody have anymore info on this situation? The more information we put out about it the more people can learn to avoid a possible tragedy in the future. Be careful out there everyone. My thoughts are with the family. Very sad story.

It’s sad to hear how this story ended.  My condolences to his family and friends.

Well, crap.  One does wonder if he'd had a SPOT or InReach if the resolution would have been more positive.

My guess is that he was looking for his truck and it either got dark and/or foggy which made it impossible to see the truck even from 100 yards. He spent a night out of in bad weather and got hypothermic. If that is accurate a GPS (properly used) would have probably saved his life.

It will be interesting to hear the details for sure.

I'm a map and compass guy. Guess that speaks for how long I've been putting down boot tracks. I will not pretend to know how he felt when he knew he was in trouble. But I do know well that sinking feeling when a guy is turned around, misplaced or lost (for awhile :)    I have a brand new Rhino 650 my son pushed me to buy before this season. Guess I owe it to him and my grandson to learn how to use it for other than a two way radio....

So damn sad.

This is a sad story, young man enjoying the outdoors and things go south.
Having spent 45 years chasing elk, this is a situation I have dreaded for decades.
My thoughts and prayers to the family.

As an avid outdoorsman, fellow hunter and Land Surveyor, I will offer this....
When hunting in the forest, if you park at the end of the road, aim for a point 1/4 of a mile up the road from the truck.
Having used a map and compass for ever, this is the tried and true method to assure that you intersect the road.
You may hit the road and have to walk to the truck, but it's basically foolproof.
Something to remember is that the more error you feel exists in your navigation, the further up the road you aim.
I for one would rather walk a mile than miss the end of road.
Having worked as a professional land surveyor for years, I am REALLY good at forest navigation, but during the hunt, even I get disoriented.

This methodology also hold for GPS as you can miss the end of a road much easier in the dark.

As a side note, my son bought me a pair of 650 Garmins, one of which I carry.
My technical skills are limited, but I can use the basics.

We all owe it to our families to return after the hunt.

R.I. P. Joel,
Rob.

No official word yet, but I did find this in one report

"An autopsy will be conducted by the Clark County medical examiner's office. An investigation is ongoing.

"There is still a lot of questions I think right now," said Brown. "There are a lot of things pointing to the fact that he was a bit disoriented perhaps, even though he came back towards the truck. There are a lot of indicators of someone who may have been suffering a little bit from hypothermia."
