The Story behind The Diamond buck (Mr. December)
« on: December 02, 2017, 08:45:25 AM »
Anybody who bought my calendar two years ago, might remember this buck.   I first filmed him then.   I suppose he probably has the honor of being the youngest buck ever in one of my cals.  I figured he was 2.5 years old.  I included him because of the morning cool shot and it was a good fit for the calendar.  He also obviously had special antlers as well.   I said to myself I sure hope I get to see him in a couple years.

Fast forward two years.....

My wife and I were on our way home from our photo safari but wanted to recheck an area where  we had previously seen a nice buck and I wanted to try to get better photos of him.  There was a different buck there now.  I instantly knew who it was.  He was literally 50 feet from where the following photo was taken two years previously.   This buck had been spotted earlier in the year, and there was no shortage  of people looking for him. No one could seem to come up with him.    He had been named "The Diamond buck".     Luckily he was in the sun and not in the shade of the basalt rimrock so I was able to get a couple shots of him before he disappeared.  They are  pretty much all similiar to the best one which I used in my calendar, so wont be posting them here.   I really wish I could have gotten better photos of him.  As I've stated before, its a lot harder to get a good photo of a deer than it is to shoot one.    For a  4.5 year old buck he was amazing! An absolute special deer.  Id like to imagine what he'd be like in 2 more years, peaking at 6.5, but we will only be able to imagine....
I was very fortunate to get him "on film" when I did.   He was harvested the next day by a lucky tag holder.   Congrats to the hunter for a very fine Trophy.

Love that frosty goatee. I'm sure 2 years growth was looking very good.
