Muzzle Loader re-bore.
« on: January 07, 2018, 09:43:17 AM »
Can anyone recommend where to get a .50 cal muzzle loader re-vored to .54 cal? I bought a TC White Mountain Carbine for really really cheap. The blueing and wood is 95% but the bore is pitted bad and has barely any rifling left. If I could get it bored out it give her a little more punch and I could actually use one of my favorite percussion guns.
Practical accuracy and a packable rifle.
Blued steel and walnut is always better.

I wouldn't rebarrel that 50 caliber the 50 in the 54 usually two different Barrel sizes boring out a 52-54 men make the barrel too thin which would be risking of exploding in your face I would just get a new barrel for it

The barrel being made to thin was one of my concerns, however I havent had any luck finding a new barrel for it.

I really depends on how thick the barrel is to begin with.  The old CVA Mountain rifles used the same barrel for 54's and 58's, I believe the Lyman guns use the same barrel diameter for 50 and 54.

If you get a larger barrel then you have to re-inlet the stock and your hammer to nipple geometry could be off.

more info in a minute

Peruse all the info here and then make some calls to people who actually do the work if you want the correct answers, not just hearsay internet info.

Google a guy named Bobby Hoyt in Pennsylvania.  Reboring muzzleloaders is what he does for a living.  He can tell you if the barrel has enough metal to safely be opened up to .54
