JAMESTOWN, N.D. –  A 69-year-old Vietnam vet who lost a hand after it got stuck in a meat mixer while he was making sausage at his North Dakota home says he had to slice off his left arm above the wrist with a butcher knife or risk bleeding to death.

In his first public comments since the Aug. 17 accident, Myron Schlafman said he credits two police officers with saving his life by quickly applying a tourniquet before ambulance crews took him to the hospital.

"I've always appreciated life, but not as much as I do now," he told KFGO radio.

Schlafman said he was taking a chunk of meat out of the mixer in the garage of his Jamestown home when he accidentally stepped on a pedal to activate the machine.

Schlafman spent nine days in the hospital and underwent three surgeries. He will be fitted with a prosthetic in a few months, after the stump on his left arm has fully healed. (AP)

"I just looked and knew I was in big trouble," said Schlafman, who is right-handed.

The bone was severed, but his arm was still caught by muscle, nerves and skin. He grabbed the knife, which was mercifully within reach, and cut himself free.

"If I would have hesitated, I would have stood right there and bled to death," he said.

"It would be very easy to sit back, feel sorry for myself and get depressed," he said. "I went through Vietnam. I can handle this

Geebers, unplug the toaster before you use a butter knife to dig out the stuck piece of toast....ya might touch somethin and give yourself a jolt. Kinda permanent even..

And when the coffee maker floods out underneath, try to remember to unplug it before wiping up with a wet sponge...

I mean...I'm not going to consider sticking my hand down a garbage disposal to free up space unless I have personally shut down the circuit breaker, and know there isn't anyone else in the house to accidentally reset it

Terrible accident, and feel for the guy, but Darwin Awards still exist

yeah after reading this really not gonna slow me down on making my own sausage...have never used any kind of mixer-electric or manual.  grind my meat on a coarse plate, season and mix by hand in tubs then run it back through the grinder on the fine plate and stuff brats at that time or run bulk and  bag it.  used to run bulk then vac seal it but bought some of those 1 lb bags and ran them with the stuffer attachment, filled up to the line then spun the bag down to remove the "headspace" and ran them through the commercial taper....works great..weighed the first bags and found that i can get them to within an ounce of where i want them with just a little practice
beer---it's whats for dinner
