i am looking for a good gps and dont know what to get. i am willing to spend 150$ on one. what do you think i should get???

Get a Garmin Etrex.  I have one that's over 10 years old and its never let me down.  About $99

What I had posted was that $150 will barely get you good GPS software anymore. If you want to get an entry level GPS then the Etrex is great. But if you save about twice that and get one with a newer receiver/antenna you will be much happier.

I think there is an etrex that has the high sensitivity receiver but I don't know what the cost is. I would definitely recommend not buying a unit that doesn't have the good receiver. There's lots of good deals on ebay if you don't mind getting a used one. I have the Garmin 60csx and love it. But it's about $350.

Go on ebay and look at the Magellan Explorist line of GPS. It is a unit that is easy to use and has a compas, altimeter, way points, speed etc... I have a 100, and a 230, and I like them a lot! I payed $79 for my 230 on ebay last year. Payed $89 for my 100 4 years ago.

The basic Etrex does not have a compass but it does tell you where you are, which direction that you are going, which direction you want to go, how fast you are going, other basic numbers, everything that you need to navigate. 

Before I got a Garmin I owned several Magellan’s; several because they never lasted very long and had to be replaced.  Now I own 5 Garmin units, 2 handheld, 2 in the boat, one in the wife’s car.  I’ve never had to replace a Garmin.

Save you pennies and geta 60CSX,they are worth it.
The price has droped dramatically sence i bought mine $450.

Be careful with the Magellon brand, many of there units have internal, rechargeable batteries,and you can not change the batteries when it goes dead in the field. A friend of mine has a Maggellon and wish he didn'twaste his money, especially after i got the 60csx.

Look at a Garmin Rino. You get a GPS and Radio all in one!!!

When you go Magellan explorist 400 or above you get into the rechargeable batteries. My explorist 100 and 220 run on 2 AA batteries. They work great and are very easy to use. I have used both up flying with my Brother and Father and they are nuts on!

Like any other consumer product, there are a few competitors. But unless you are just sold on another brand, you will probably be really happy with the features you get in the Garmin Vista or Legend units, in C, Cx or HCx models - depending on your budget. They aren't entry level as much as they aren't over priced. I've owned two of the Magellans and four Garmin models over the past 12 years and use mine for hunting, fishing, auto navigation, and geo-caching mostly. I enjoy the small size/weight, ease of use (the user interface on Garmin devices is better than Magellan) and rich feature set of these well priced units. You won't find too many must-haves in other units that make it worth having over these little Garmins.


Also, let's face it, not everyone hunts the backcountry out of a backpack. If you spend more of your time in the truck for scouting and hunting, I am telling you, you won't find a much easier to use, surprisingly feature rich, empowering or less expensive tool than the Garmin StreetPilot C320. There are other models, but for around $75 this is an AWESOME GPS for the Dash. My wife calls these dash mounted units "my girlfriend." She (the GPS) is always right, I always listen to her and she talks nice to me.

Have the older garmin 530 works great, buddy of mine has the new 530 and really likes it.
