Acting USFWS Director Outlines "Core Priorites"
« on: February 15, 2018, 11:13:12 PM »
In an email last week USFWS Acting Director Greg Sheehan (a Trump appointee) outlined his "core priorities" for the years going forward. They are:

#1 Striking a regulatory balance
#2 Strengthening Endangered Species Act implementation
#3 Accelerating ESA species recovery and delisting
#4 Restoring the National Wildlife Refuges - Addressing Maintenance Costs
#5 Improving public access to hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation on National Wildlife Refuges (won't see much change here in WA)
#6 Protecting people and wildlife along the border
#7 Strengthening state and tribal partnerships
#8 Developing and expanding partnerships with the private sector

Sheehan's actual role he was nominated for was Deputy Director (second in command) but since the Trump Administration has yet to name a USFWS Director, Sheehan is serving in an acting role.

Interesting.

I wonder what a regulatory balance would look like and how one would strengthen the ESA and also accelerate species recovery and delisting.
People get offended at nothing at all. So, speak your mind and be unapologetic.

It’s all vague enough to mean nothing until actual priorities are set.

Well done political appointee.

If you have 8 "core" priorities, that pretty much guarantees that nothing will actually happen on any of them, particularly once the "secondary" list of 30 comes out.

We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.

Not sure why anyone is surprised. What did you think he'd say? "Hey were no longer going to enforce/implement the ESA?" He'd get sued and lose to a lawyer just out of law school.

Contrary to what many thought would happen both NMFS and USFWS have continued to list species under the ESA under Trump, including a handful of species already listed for protection in 2018.
