Keep the OD.  Nothing sucks worse then cruising at 3500 r's on the highway all day long.  Don't forget to look into a different stall converter.  Check ebay for heads. Be careful on getting a DIY port and polish job.  I like the 383 but its has a bit too much stroke for me. I like to wind them tight and listen to them scream.   I would do a 327, duntov cam, best heads I could afford. 4 bolt main block. I hate trannys. They blow up no matter what when u push 500 HP thru them.  I love projects like this,

I'm on the opposite end of the power band. I'd love a motor that I never need to take over 4500 RPM.

Of course, with the lower rpm range, I'm thinking "there's no replacement for displacement"... Since I'm building a big block for my own flatbed - should I build two?..we could do a nice streetable 454 for just north of $2k, or great pump gas 496 that will deliver at least 550 ft# of torque from ~2000-5000 rpm (peaking over 600) for well under what a new SP383 goes for.  :chuckle:

The world is moving to LS motors for a reason.  They scream!  Had a 425hp 350 small block chevy and LS crate motor just blows it away. Lighter too.

I've just got a thing for small blocks. I'm not sure why. I also hunt with a .243.
I guess I'm just not compensating...

Roger that.  My flatbed is very insecure.  :chuckle:

You haven't ridden in the right LS rig yet. Let me know when you are back south. I know a guy.  :chuckle:

Of course this is just like Brad Pitt and George Clooney arguing about who's girlfriend is hotter. If a big block or an LS motor just showed up on my doorstep, I'd be renting an engine hoist!

(Keep that in mind if you draw me for the Hunt Wa gift exchange this year!)
