Spring Snow Goose Recommendation
« on: February 26, 2018, 01:20:03 PM »
I'm toying with the idea of booking a spring snow goose hunt.  Anyone done it and have recommendations on who to book with?

I went to Mound City, MO last year.  It can be very hit or miss.  It all depends on weather.  Go with a guide outfit that moves with the birds.  You get one that is stationary and it could be lights out or you spend all day to only get a few birds or skunked.  I would hit Arkansas if you can.  They get first crack at the birds and many times do extremely well.  SD is another option to consider.  Several eastern WA guides hunt in SD.  Bill Saunders is an example of one and they seem to do good.

Just don't expect to go and shoot a 100 plus birds.  Every guide has a few of those days during the spring conservation season, but it's all timing and weather like I mentioned.  When I went to Mound City, MO they said a decent day was 20 birds for the group after I got there.  I could have done that where I hunt.  It was cool to see and experience.  I went around the famous Squaw Creek area that is frequently talked about.  It literally has guides that hunt every field around this reserve.  Never have I witnessed so many snow goose spreads.  These guides leave them out all season which is solid for about a month.  Many start working the birds down in Arkansas and work their way north.  Definitely an interesting season and fun to hunt over large spreads of birds and to fire off lots of shells.  Invest now in an extended mag.  I would get one that goes to the end of your barrel and practice shooting it full a few times.  Adds a lot of wait out towards the end, slows the swing and just takes some getting use to.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!
